Support That Honors the Whole Person
People do not exist separately from their relationships, cultures, communities, histories, or material circumstances. Therapy should not ignore those realities—or treat every struggle as an individual failure.
Comunidad Counseling provides virtual counseling for adults throughout Texas, with deep roots in South Texas. Our work is person-centered, relational, trauma-informed, and grounded in liberation. That means we remain curious about your experiences, recognize the systems affecting your life, and trust that you are the expert on what it means to live it. You do not need to fit neatly into one category to deserve support. We can begin with what is happening in your life right now and make sense of it together.
Areas We Can Explore Together
Trauma
Trauma can affect how you understand yourself, relate to others, experience safety, and move through the world. Its effects may appear as anxiety, shame, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, difficulty trusting, or patterns that once helped you survive but no longer feel sustainable. Trauma-informed counseling creates space to understand these responses with compassion rather than judgment. The goal is not to force you to revisit experiences before you are ready. It is to help you recognize what your mind and body have been carrying and develop a greater sense of choice, safety, and connection.
Intergenerational and Cultural Trauma
Not every wound begins with us. Families and communities may carry the effects of colonization, racism, migration, poverty, violence, displacement, cultural loss, rigid gender roles, religious harm, or generations of survival under oppressive systems. Therapy can help you examine what was passed down, understand how it shaped you, and decide what you want to carry forward. Breaking a cycle does not require rejecting your family or culture. It can mean honoring where you come from while creating something healthier for yourself and those who come after you.
Neurodivergent-Affirming Counseling
Neurodivergent people are often expected to function within environments that were not designed for the ways they think, communicate, regulate, or process information. Over time, masking and constantly trying to meet those expectations can contribute to exhaustion, shame, anxiety, and a sense of personal failure.
Neurodivergent-affirming counseling does not begin with the assumption that your mind needs to be fixed. Together, we can explore executive functioning, emotional regulation, sensory needs, relationships, self-advocacy, burnout, and strategies that work with your brain rather than against it.
LGBTQIA+ Affirming Counseling
Your identity is not a problem to solve. LGBTQIA+ affirming counseling provides space to explore identity, relationships, family expectations, belonging, coming out, discrimination, internalized messages, and the complicated emotions that can accompany living authentically. You will not be asked to defend, minimize, or justify who you are. Your identity and relationships will be approached with respect, curiosity, and care.
Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression do not exist in a vacuum. They may be connected to trauma, isolation, burnout, discrimination, uncertainty, overwhelming expectations, difficult relationships, or circumstances that cannot simply be changed through positive thinking.
Counseling can help you better understand your experiences, recognize patterns, develop practical tools, and create more room for rest, connection, meaning, and choice. Symptoms are information—not proof that you are broken.
Identity and Life Transitions
Change can unsettle even the parts of life that once felt certain. Career changes, relationship shifts, graduation, caregiving, parenthood, changing beliefs, coming out, aging, grief, and other transitions may raise questions about who you are and what you want next. Therapy offers space to examine the expectations placed on you—by yourself, other people, your culture, or society—and distinguish them from the life you genuinely want to build.
Boundaries and Self-Trust
Many people learn that belonging depends on staying quiet, avoiding conflict, caring for everyone else, or making themselves easier for others to accept. These patterns may have protected important relationships, but they can also make it difficult to recognize your own needs and trust your decisions.
Counseling can help you define your values, understand your limits, communicate more clearly, and make choices without treating other people’s disappointment as evidence that you have done something wrong.
Burnout and Caregiver Stress
Caring deeply does not make you endlessly available. Burnout can develop when emotional labor, work, caregiving, family responsibilities, financial pressure, and systemic barriers leave little room for your own needs. You may feel exhausted, irritable, disconnected, resentful, ashamed, or unable to rest without guilt. Therapy can provide space to acknowledge what you are carrying, identify what is and is not sustainable, and explore ways to care for yourself without pretending your responsibilities or circumstances do not exist.
What Counseling at Comunidad Looks Like
You are the expert on your life. My responsibility as your therapist is to remain curious, compassionate, empathetic, and nonjudgmental—even when the work becomes uncomfortable.
I will not reduce you to a diagnosis or treat a clinical label as your identity. Diagnoses can help explain symptoms and provide access to resources, but labels are for jars, not people. Our work may include reflection, practical strategies, honest conversations, identifying patterns, understanding the effects of systems and relationships, and making space for the moments when something finally clicks. We will work collaboratively, with your goals and lived experience guiding the process.
